Our Zakat policy

Your Zakat, kept separate and passed on in full

When you mark a donation as Zakat, we track it separately from Sadaqah and general donations and distribute it appropriately.

Our 100% donation policy applies to Zakat too. Our running costs are covered separately, so your whole Zakat reaches the people it is meant for.

  • Zakat tracked separately from other donations
  • 100% of your Zakat reaches our programmes
  • Gift Aid can be added if you are a UK taxpayer

How to give your Zakat

Three steps, start to finish.

  1. 1

    Work out what you owe

Use the calculator above. Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth if it is above the nisab and you have held it for a full lunar year.

  2. 2

Donate and mark it as Zakat

Give online and tick the Zakat option, or pay by bank transfer with “Zakat” in the reference. Add Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer.

  3. 3

    We pass it on

Your Zakat is tracked separately and distributed appropriately to families in need in Bangladesh and the UK.

Zakat questions

General guidance. For your own situation, please consult a scholar.

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth you must have before Zakat is due. It is set by the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, so the figure in pounds changes with metal prices. Many people use the silver value because it is lower and means more people give.

How much Zakat do I pay?

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth: cash, gold and silver, investments, money owed to you and business stock, minus debts due now. It is due once your wealth has stayed above the nisab for a full lunar year.

Can I pay my Zakat in Ramadan?

Yes. Many people choose to pay their Zakat in Ramadan because of the extra reward of good deeds in that month. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, depending on the moon sighting.

Does the Fatema Foundation take anything from my Zakat?

No. Our 100% donation policy applies to Zakat. Our operational costs are covered separately, so your whole Zakat reaches the people it is meant for. It is tracked separately from other donations.

Can I add Gift Aid to my Zakat?

Yes, if you are a UK taxpayer and you pay enough Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax to cover the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in the tax year. Tick the Gift Aid box when you donate and we will claim an extra 25p for every £1.
